Europa Nostra's European Heritage Congress 2013 i Athen

    13. jun kl 09.00 - 17. jun kl 22.00

Europa Nostra’s European Heritage Congress for 2013 will take place in Athens between 13 and 17 June 2013.

This will bring together members of Europa Nostra and other representatives of the ever-growing cultural heritage movement from all over Europe. The Congress will mark the 50th anniversary of Europa Nostra’s continuous action in favour of Europe’s cultural and natural heritage.

The Congress is being organised with the invaluable assistance of our member organisation and  country representative in Greece, Elliniki Etairia, which itself is celebrating this year 40 years of action for the protection of the Greek environment and cultural heritage. The Europa Nostra Congress in Athens will be attended by a large number of heritage professionals, volunteers from all over Europe, many prominent invited guests, as well as high representatives of EU Institutions, the Council of Europe and UNESCO. H.E. Mr Karolos Papoulias, President of the Hellenic Republic, has granted his patronage to the entire Congress and to the Awards Ceremony in particular.

Following meetings of the Europa Nostra Board and Council on 13-14 June, the Local Award Ceremony at the Averoff Building - where the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens is located - on the evening of 14 June and the Excellence Fair with presentations of the achievements receiving a 2013 EU/EN Award on 15 June, the two main events of the Congress will take place on Sunday, 16 June:
    a) In the morning: our General Assembly, marking the 50th anniversary of Europa Nostra, hosted by the New Acropolis Museum and chaired by Europa Nostra’s President Maestro Plácido Domingo. On this occasion we intend to announce the first Europa Nostra list of “7 Most Endangered Heritage Sites in Europe”.

    b) In the evening: the European Heritage Awards Ceremony, celebrating the winners of the 2013 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards. The ceremony will take place at the Odeion of Herodes Atticus under the Acropolis, with permission and support of the Greek Ministry of Culture. Maestro Plácido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra, and Mrs Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner responsible for Education and Culture will be co-hosting.
The ceremony includes a cultural/musical performance which will express the link between Europe’s tangible and intangible heritage and highlight the deep connection between Greek literature and music and the natural environment in which it has flourished over about thirty centuries.

We will also be arranging up to three photo exhibitions (for more details see the programme). In addition, a number of heritage visits will give you the possibility to see archaeological sites and museums in Athens such as the Acropolis, the Theatre of Dionysos, the New Acropolis Museum, the Agora and the Pnyx, the Byzantine and Benaki Museums, and the neoclassical National Observatory of Athens.

The Congress will conclude on 17 June with a One-Day Island Cruise, an unique opportunity to visit two of the most beautiful Greek islands near Athens: Hydra and Aegina (for details see the Congress programme). Limited number of places available for the cruise. The cruise rate is 175 Euro.

Post-Congress Tours will offer a choice between a full-day excursion on 18 June with visits to the classical Temple at Sounion and the Industrial Heritage Site of Lavrion (both ancient and modern) and a 3-day/2-night tour in the Peloponnese on 18 – 20 June. This tour has been specially designed for Europa Nostra; it will include visits to Mystra, Kalamata, Olympia and Messene, staying at the Romanos Hotel of the Costa Navarino resort, one of the best in Greece.
If overall numbers are at least forty and at least fifteen of these prefer to tour the Crusader and Venetian castles of Pylos (Palaiokastro), Methone and Koroni as an alternative to Olympia, a visit to these sites will be arranged for Wednesday, 19th June”. For more details about the post-congress tour please see the Congress programme.
